The manual for the machine is a 400-page PDF, open on a laptop in the supervisor's office, two buildings from the floor.
The man working the fault has both hands inside the panel. He knows the step he needs is somewhere past page 200, under a heading he cannot remember, in a document he cannot touch right now anyway — his gloves are off and his hands are not clean enough for a screen.
He calls across the shop to whoever is nearest. She worked on a unit like this one last year and thinks she remembers the order. She is mostly right. The job gets done, the way jobs get done when the correct answer exists but cannot reach the person who needs it.
Why the manual keeps losing
The manual is not usually wrong. It is unreachable at the one moment it needs to be reached. A document written by someone sitting down, with clean hands and time to read, is being used by someone standing up, mid-task, with neither.
The obvious fix is to put the PDF on a tablet and add a search box. That still assumes a hand free to hold it, a screen worth reading in that light, and a moment to stop and type. None of those are true at the panel. It is the same document in a smaller box.
The harder problem is what happens after the manual is wrong. Every OEM manual has a step that does not quite match some unit in the field — an older revision, a part swapped once and never noted. Today, the person who finds that mismatch works around it and says nothing, because there is nowhere to say it that changes the document. The gap stays open for the next person, and the one after that.
A manual nobody can correct just repeats the same wrong page, forever.
So the belief underneath Nirdesh is not really about voice. Voice is what lets it reach someone with dirty hands. The belief is that a manual should be able to learn from the people using it, the same day, on the floor — not wait for the next revision that may never come.
What actually happens
Nirdesh reads:
- The OEM's own manual and service procedures for that machine.
- Which machine and which step the person is on right now.
- What the person says out loud, including when a step does not match what they are looking at.
It answers by voice, one step at a time, in the person's own language, and waits before giving the next one. No screen to hold, no gloves to remove, no signal required.
When someone says a step is wrong — this bolt is not where the manual says, this part was replaced with a different one — that correction is recorded against that step, and it stands for whoever asks about that machine next. Nobody has to file it, and nobody has to wait for the next printed revision.
A year of that is a manual that has been quietly rewritten by everyone who ever needed it to be right, instead of one that was written once and left alone. For an OEM, it is also the first honest record of which procedures actually give people trouble, and which ones never do.
The decision to accept a correction, or to call it in as wrong, still belongs to the person on the floor. Nirdesh's job is to get the manual to them, and to remember what they said. The record stays on the machine, in the building it came from.
